Sharp critique by Yang Kuisong (杨奎松) of Wang Hui’s (汪晖) article on the Korean war

Sharp critique by Yang Kuisong (杨奎松) of Wang Hui’s (汪晖) article on the Korean war, accusing him of ignoring or misreading facts (mis)-guided by his own ideology. In this context, Yang Kuisong uses the phrase 以论带史 (let.: guiding history by theory), going back to methodological discussions of the 1950s and 60s on the correct relationship between theory (Marxism-Leninism) and history (facts, particular Chinese history). Very interesting read!

 經史之間:印順佛教經史研究與近代知識的轉型

龔雋(廣州中山大學哲學系教授)

摘要:本文把印順法師的佛學研究放置在近代中國學術史的脈絡中去進行系統論究,從晚近經史之學的流變去分析印順佛學研究的表現,特別是其遊移於經史學之間的複雜關係。文章分別從五個方面來對此問題詳密論述。一、從近代經史學的轉型考察近代中國佛學的嬗變,特別是近代知識史形態佛教史的誕生與發展。二、分析印順佛學研究如何化經為史,而傾向於運用近代知識史的方式來探究佛法。這裏討論了他關於「知識的學問」觀念及其佛史探源等諸多有關佛史研究的方式。三、論述印順佛教史學研究中的國際視域,而著重探討了日本近代知識史形態的佛學研究對印順佛學史研究的影響。四、探究印順佛教解經學方式,這裏不僅分析了印順解經書寫是如何出入於經與史之間而作複雜的疏通與融合,還論述了印順解經與傳統佛教解經方式之間的異同。五、從印順佛教經史學的論述內部及現代史學理論等方面,探究印順佛學研究在知識與價值之間進行融合而又有其難以克服的困境,對印順佛學思想內在的緊張性也作了細緻的論疏。

不夸张地说,晚清民国文学中所呈现的各式时间体验,着实构成了中国现代性兴起之史中极为独特的一个部分。这不仅决定了我们考察近代时间观念转变的时候,无法漠视文学史料,同时也解释了时间观念的现代性研究,往往为文学研究者所热衷的原因。然文学视野的时间研究,不免相对淡化历史的维度,常常难以餍足史学研究者的胃口。

在中国传统汉语里,“时间”一词并不流行,佛经以外的主要用法为“目前”、“眼下”、“一时”的意思。

In this long analysis of Liu Yizheng’s late opus magnum “Guoshi yaoyi” (国史要义), Wang Jiafan puts him in a line with the 史通 by Liu Zhiji and the 文史通义 by Zhang Xuecheng. He discusses him using the concept of cultural conservatism comparing him with the historiography and cultural position of Chen Yinque.

Li Aiyong (李爱勇) on the paradigmatic changes in Western research on Qing history and the reaction triggered by that in China

In this article Li Aiyong describes the far-reaching changes in Western research on the history of the Qing dynasty overcoming the previous paradigm of the assimilation of the Manchus. The new paradigm emphasizes the complex ethnic relations in the Qing empire and comes to a new, more Manchu-centered understanding of the nature of the Qing dynasty. This new research poses a direct challenge to Chinese researchers who find themselves in the difficult position of being committed to nationalism and yet still heavily relying on Western academic discourse and thus again just reacting to a foreign challenge.
